22nd Spell: [Video/Action for Route 38]

[The video clicks on with a view of a Magnezone hovering over the long grass, peering around as though looking for something. After several moments, it turns back to the gear and shakes its body back and forth, looking remarkably like a shaking head.]

Well, it's not surprising. I did have to search for weeks to find you, after all.

[The Magnezone bleeps unintelligibly at the gear. Even those who can understand Pokemon (and other Pokemon themselves) will only hear noises that sound oddly like R2-D2.]

Maybe someone else has one you can talk to. [The gear turns around to show Twilight's face.] A question. Well, two. First off, who out there has a Pokemon from the Magnemite line? And second, does anyone else have... trouble communicating with them? Of course most of us can't understand Pokemon when they talk, but even my other Pokemon can't seem to understand anything Tesla has to say. Are there other Magnemites who seem to have that issue? For that matter, other Pokemon in general? It's something I've never even heard of before.

Hmmm... and on a more general topic, here's something I've been wondering about for a while. If you were to take six Pokemon, start them at level one, and try to train them together as a coherent team, which ones would you pick? I've been considering the idea for a while now, and while I'm not certain it's practical to start right now I'd like to start gathering input.

(Rainbow shudders for a brief moment herself, and not just because of Applejack's Mamoswine.)

Ha, yeah - and about as smart as messing with Dash while you're on her back...

(She knew it was an accident, but part of Rainbow felt responsible for Spike getting hurt that time since Rapidash was her Pokemon.)

Hmm. Maybe it's speaking the Pokémon equivalent of binary.

[It's said jokingly, but hey, it could be true.]

Guess Rotoms could be another option, or Porygons. Not exactly metallic, but they do have a whole lot to do with machinery.

[Moving on, he takes a few moments to ponder Twilight's next topic. Elekid, huh? His brow furrows, and he places a hand against his chin.]

Anyway, if you're going for an Elekid, the first thing you'll want to do is deal with that ground type weakness. Ice, Grass, and Water all get the job done, but I'd personally go with water. Fewer weaknesses, for one. And since Electivire's got a focus on speed and power, you might want some bulk to back it up. Vaporeon's not a bad pick. They're small, but they take hits like a tank. Then there's Swampert-- only one weakness, and it's easy to cover. Heck, I think Electivire can pick up Fire Punch.

[Whew, he started to ramble there a little. It's been a while since he's really delved into strategies, but it's kind of fun.]

Due to lack of experience with the line, I can't really say what's going on with your Magnezone, though I've always found them a bit... unusual. They do seem less like living things and more like machines, even though they seem to function similarly to every other Pokemon.

As for your other question... hm. Well, I'm not sure what specific Pokemon I'd recommend, but I'd suggest things that cover each others' bases fairly well. Dragon and Steel seem like they'd be fairly useful to start out with, but I wouldn't recommend a team with just those types.

It is strange...they're not very difficult to find, are they? It might just be personal preference, otherwise.

(Maybe a little. It'll take some trust to make sure you'd still have a spine after that.

Cadence takes a moment to ponder.
)

Well, what about Pokemon that have several different forms and evolutions? It'll let them branch out into different paths while not needing to search for six different species.

(Too bad Spike's Pinchy never had that common sense. More like a case of all brawn and no brains; Rainbow's been known to think so this doesn't apply to her.)

Of course not! Even I know that, and I'm her trainer.

That may be helpful, though one wonders if those would be equally difficult to understand...

...I'm honestly not sure. From what I've noticed, Dragonite and Salamance seem fairly common, but they seem rather rare to begin with.

Well, electric takes care of water and flying types. Ground wipes out electric, poison, fire, and rock. Water covers ground, rock, and fire types...

[He has to grab a sheet of paper and jot down these notes. It's easier to strategize when he's not pulling this all out of his head. Now then...]

Obviously, that grass type weakness is the biggest problem right now. Fire Punch will help, but if you want a real fire type, hm... Ever thought about Infernape?

Well, we could keep him tied up and use Sweet Scent on him over and over. Hehe, maybe the same with Dozer!

(It's not like Pinchy can be tossed into a pen whenever he's like that.)

I'd say it all boils down to flexibility. Blaziken hits hard, but it's not as speedy as Infernape. Emboar's probably got the worst luck being slow and frail.

[Which he just doesn't get. Emboars look like they'd be tough as bricks.]

But Infernapes have speed, power, and versatility on their side. They can heal with Slack Off, lay down some Stealth Rocks, even wipe out their weaknesses with Grass Knot, ThunderPunch, and U-Turn.

To be fair, that seems a bit mundane compared to the fact that we effectively have a dedicated effort to bring back Pokemon that have been dead for millions of years... and that's discounting the ones that we'll obtain when we get around to reviving the fossils we obtained during that incident two months ago.

(Cadence giggles.) I can't imagine why...but that means all the Magnezones are there are that much more special, aren't they?

(Of course Cadence is going to spin this into something positive. She always does.)

Six Eevees sound like they'll take on the job just fine. It'll also come with the benefit of working with six adorable little Eevees at the same time.
