Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes! Finally, my very own Magnezone!

[She practically giggles in glee, clambering up onto the top of her newly evolved Pokemon with a grin. The Magnezone waits for her to be settled on top of it, and then slowly rises up into the air.]

Sounds like a yes to me. He's a Steel-type, right? I bet could go for a good polishing, too.

Steel/Electric. Which means he can put Snails in his place pretty easily too.

[It's hard to tell, but the Magnezone may be smiling... as much as something without a mouth can.]

Sounds like an interesting combination. No wonder he has spaceship-like qualities.

Exactly. A completely unique typing, too, and very useful. It has twelve different resistances, as well as a complete immunity to poison. The only weaknesses it has are fire, fighting, and ground, and with the Magnet Rise move it can make itself fly to avoid ground-type attacks.

That's pretty impressive. Shame I didn't hear about it before fighting Falkner. Can they paralyze other Pokémon, along with that?

Indeed they can. Nearly all electric attacks have that ability, but of particular note are Thunder Wave, which is used solely for paralysis, and Zap Cannon, which is very powerful and always paralyzes, but is usually inaccurate.

[She can't help but grin a bit.] Unless you circumvent that flaw.

With an attack that can raise accuracy, for example?

Correct. For example, there's the ability Lock-On, which ensures the next attack will hit, at least unless the opponent recalls the Pokemon mid-battle. And Magnezone's do learn it. Combine that with Zap Cannon and you have a vicious attack, though of course you need to spend some time using Lock-On.

And since there are ways of making switching out very unpleasant and ways of ensuring your opponent will never hit you, you could theoritically force them to take it over and over until you win.

Either you've been doing this for a while, or you catch on quickly. Of course, there's one other factor to consider. Some Magnezone's, like mine, have a special ability that makes switching out against them impossible if their enemy is at least part Steel. So against an opponent like Jasmine of the Olivine Gym, who specializes in Steel types... well, you can imagine the uses.

I've only been here for three months, but I always did get good grades in school. How many part Steel-types happen to have a weakness to electric attacks? And how many of those does Jasmine use?

There are exactly two with that weakness, Skarmory and Empoleon. Skarmory is of particular note because its main strengths are in defense and setting up the battleground to favor its trainer with moves like Spikes. A good Magnezone can counteract that nicely. Empoleon is more balanced, but is also a good target for a Magnezone. Unfortunately I don't know what Jasmine's team consists of, but I would consider it very likely she has a Skarmory at least.

I'll ask for more info from those who defeated her, then. If it can give an advantage against one of the Gyms, catching one would be more than worth my time. Where did you find him?

Fittingly enough, Magnemite, the first stage of Magnezone, are first found on route 38, the route between Ecruteak and Olivine. They are very rare though, so expect to spend a lot of time searching. Mine took me over two weeks to find.

Two weeks? If I also spend them training my Houndoom, I'd have two options against Steel... Then again, Dark Hound's had some trouble gaining levels lately. A newly caught Magnemite would grow much more quickly.

It's to be expected that Pokemon slow down in gaining levels as they get stronger, though it can be circumvented by fighting more powerful opponents. About what level is your Houndour, and where are you training?

He's level 68, and we're in Azalea. We had some... trouble getting past the first Gym.

Oh. Well, yes, that would explain it. The Pokemon you'll find around Azalea won't be very good for training at that level. You'll want to go up around Ecruteak.

Can't do that just yet. We're going for the Gym this week, and the last egg that hatched hasn't been feeling well. I don't think it's up to more days of travel yet.

What sort of Pokemon is it? If it's fairing poorly maybe there are a few tips that could help it out.

A Beldum. I try not to make it use its attack because it has recoil, but it still has trouble moving for more than a few minutes at a time.

Ahhh. Actually, a friend of mine caught a Beldum recently. Maybe she'd have some insight.

I hope hers has some energy. Seeing a lump of metal droop down is a bit sad.

I'm not sure, actually. I haven't really spent any time with AJ's Beldum yet.
