25th Spell: [Video]

You know, of all the Pokemon to honor, Slowpoke seems like a rather odd choice.

[If Twilight's voice sounds funny, it's because she's currently at the bottom of a well. And those familiar with Azalea town should probably be able to get clued in pretty quickly that it's Slowpoke Well, specifically.]

Not that I have anything against the species in general but... it's not a Legendary or anything, which is what these are usually named after. I guess it could just be because there are so many of them... though I haven't actually seen any yet.

[As she says that there's a squish sound, and the video wobbles when she jumps.]

Ah! Oh... There you are. [The view shifts to a Slowpoke, who seems entirely undisturbed by the fact that it just got stepped on.] Good, I'm glad you're here after all. Snails, come on out!

[One pop of a pokeball later, a Slowbro is standing there staring down at it's brethren. The two of them stare at one another for several moments before the Slowbro talks.

Sloooooooow

The Slowpoke stares in response for several more moments before answering with a Pooooooke of its own. Twilight groans.]

... Okay in retrospect I don't know why I thought this would need to be record- waugh!

[She jumps again, jiggling the camera, and the view turns to show several more Slowpokes coming towards her.]

Oh. Well, there really are a lot of them down here, aren't there? I guess Snails will have plenty of company for this little visit... Wait. They're coming from the direction of the stairs up, aren't they? Which means the path back is now all slimy and I'm liable to fall on my face...

[She and the camera swivel around back to Snails, who stares blankly at her, but with a big dopey grin on his face.]

You had them do that on purpose, didn't you?

[This seems like a really silly accusation at first...

Until he slowly, deliberately winks at her.]

You're not funny!

[She sounds it too, the aggravation clear in every word.]

[ There's a sigh there before he speaks again. At least she'll be fine. ]

That's a relief. Looks like your Slowbro has it out for you though.

He's a merciless prankster. Absolutely incorrigible. You expect that sort of thing from a ghost or dark type, not a Slowbro of all things.

But I've made that complaint dozens of times, and frankly he probably enjoys being out of the ordinary that way. I'd say there are a lot of better ways he can differentiate himself though...

I guess they're more like people than we thought. Their personalities are just as varied.

Do you think he does it for attention or... does he just do it for the fun of it?

Oh there's no doubt they all have their own personalities. You should talk to Riku about some of his sometime. There's a reason he named his Aerodactyl "Terror"...

That's a good question... it could be both, honestly. I think his favorite part is when I figure out what he's done. He always looks straight at me so I can see his dopey grin when I get to that point.

Now I feel kind of lucky none of my pokemon aren't that much trouble.

[ A beat. ]

He's got an odd definition of fun then... or maybe he just knows you're smart enough to figure it out?

Don't say things like that, it's like asking this world to give you one who's difficult to deal with.

[She snorts, unamused.]

Oh he knows I'm smart. He seems to love testing my intellect as well as my patience.

[in_praetego]

[ And have a small smile from that. But yeah, best he doesn't jinx what he has going for him already. ]

I kind of know what you mean. But I guess he's just either doing it for fun or... he just thinks you're okay with it.

I think it's the first.

[And the scowl she's wearing shows all she needs to say about the other possibility.]

You know it's weird. The person I got him from is a prankster herself, but she gave him to me as an egg, so I know he can't have picked up traits from her.

[ A beat as he considers that. ]

Maybe it's subconscious? I'd say it was a trait of the species but the slowbro line seems to be a pretty laid back one.

No, it really is just him. A personal quirk rather than a species-wide one.

That said, other Slowpoke seem pretty easy for him to convince to follow his lead.

Maybe his energy's charismatic to them?

[ IDK man. ]

Hopefully he can use some of that charisma to get you out of there.

Oh I'll get out, but he's not going to be of any help. The opposite, really.

He probably likes it down there with his friends.

I never quite figured out why there seems to be such a fascination with slowbro in that town.

He probably likes making me slip and slide over Slowpoke slime even more.

[She is totally not bitter at all.]

Yeah, I asked the same thing and apparently there's a legend about a Slowpoke that ended a drought by calling rain... with a yawn.

Which, even for this world, is kind of a strange myth.

[ Fancy that. He didn't know slowpoke were slimy. ]

Given what we know about Slowpoke, I'd be surprised if that was even possible. But then, they're psychic types so... who knows?

[They are essentially slugs, after all.]

I tend to assume the rainfall was a coincidence, but it's not like we know enough to be entirely sure one way or the other.

There's truth to some legends... but sometimes they get exaggerated over the years.

[ He'll think that over though for a second. ]

Well, I guess they're also water types so we can't count that out. Either way, they're most likely not telling.

Right. So in the end it's just a matter of belief.

[ A beat. ]

Think he's ever going to let you get out? I'm sorry I'm not any closer.

Oh I'm going to get out, it's just a matter of actually walking over this slime. I think I'm going to shut it off so I can concentrate better.
