24th Spell: [Video]

Why is there no map for this place... You know, I think that's a project that really needs to be undertaken. Maps of all the various caaaaaaaaa- oof!

[Stepping onto one of the ice-covered floors that covers the ice path, Twilight is interrupted by suddenly slipping and sliding all the way over to the wall on the opposite side, which she crashes headlong into.]

Urgh... that was unpleasant. Alright, just need to pay a bit more attention, let's tryyyyyyy- argh!

[Another step has her legs slipping straight out from under her, and she slides across to another corner of the room on her knees, face first. After a highly unpleasant sounding crash, she lets out a low groan and slides down the wall until she's face down, making highly unhappy noises.]

I. Hate. This. Cave.

[As if to add insult to injury, the Pokemon who's been holding the gear this whole time proceeds to step out onto the ice and easily slide its way over to its hapless trainer, holding out the gear.]

What? Oh just... just shut it off, Champ. I don't even want to worry about that map idea until I'm out of this place, now. Oh, my head...

(Rainbow's totally used to crashing, but she slides into view of Twilight on her back, with Tails on her stomach. And she has a grin on her face.)

Need some aspirin, Twi? That looked like it hurt!

I need to get out of this horrible cave, that's what I need.

[Groaning feebly, she gives Rainbow a long-suffering look.]

Is this how it feels every time you crash into something?

(She merely grins at Twilight while nodding, pulling herself upright in a seated position as Tails remains in the cyan haired girl's lap.)

Pretty much, even when I first crashed into you the day we met! But I've tried not to crash so much lately.

(A beat.) I think Tails can help us out then, if you really wanna get away from the cave!

Really? [She gives the little firefox a curious look before extending a hand to scratch Tails's ears.]

How would she do that?

Sure! (Tails approves of the motion, happily leaning into Twilight's hand while her ears are scratched.)

Riku mentioned it to me a while back when I told him we'd be facing the last couple of Gyms in Johto. He said we'd need a Fire-type Pokemon to help melt the ice in the cave so we can get across way easier!

Tails might look small but she's one of my level 100s! Plus, Blaze using his Flamethrower attack in a cave like this? A Charizard might be a little overkill.

Oh, do you think it'll work? This is pretty thick ice... then again, a level one hundred is nothing to scoff at.

[She pulls out a ball of her own and out pops Pyrolepi.]

'Lepi, think you can give Tails here a hand with this ice?

[With a ruffled cooing sound, Pyrolepi flutters her wings in affirmation.]

Of course! Riku wouldn't steer us wrong, and if he's done this before it'll be no problem for us!

(Cue a fistpump from Rainbow while she manages to pull herself to her feet.)

Ready, Tails? Time to melt the ice with Flamethrower!

Vulpix~!!!

(Tails coos once before jumping away from Twilight and firing a stream of flame at the ice in front of the two.)

[With a trilling sound, Pyrolepi joins in the thawing efforts, and slowly the ice in front of them begins to thaw. Twilight sighs in relief as she watches it run away from the path in the form of water and steam.]

Oh thank Celestia. I just hope they can keep this up the whole way through.

(Rainbow laughs and smiles confidently at the combined efforts of both Tails and Pyrolepi.)

Of course they will! They're two of our toughest Fire-types! But if they get tired I'll just send in Blaze to help out.

Never have I been more glad for the multiple fire types in our group. Now, to get our bearings...

[She looks around a bit, trying to figure out the best path, then points down and to the left towards a slope leading upwards.]

There. I think that's the route we want to take. Do you have the compass, Rainbow?

(Finally - some good luck! She takes a moment to look in her backpack's compartments before finding it...in her back pocket.)

Ha, right here, Twi! It should be a breeze getting outta this place now.

(As long as she doesn't drop the compass mid-trek.)

Alright. Now let's see...

[She takes a quick glance at it to figure out which way is southeast, since that's the way they'll need to head to get out above Blackthorn. She's pleased to see that it's more or less the way she'd been heading for already.]

Excellent. Looks like we'll want to head east for a while more, then south when the wall in that direction opens up. As long as we keep doing that we should be able to find the way out without getting truly lost, at least.

(Rainbow heard everything that Twilight said, but one piece of information kept gnawing at her until she tilted her head curiously and just had to ask.)

...The walls in the cave open up? I thought that only happened a few times after you got inside! And that could've really helped us out back in the mountains before we hit Mahogany.

(Ironically, that's also where Rainbow brought up the idea of the girls just flying over said mountain to begin with.)

Ah, no, I didn't mean it opened up to the outside, I meant that after a certain point we'll come to a spot where the cave kind of... turns, for lack of a better word. So the wall we'll be following until then will kind of look like it's opening. At least if the directions I got are any good.

[Which, she realizes but won't say out loud, they might not be.]

(Rainbow's eyes narrow in suspicion. She's trusted Twilight ever since this journey began and especially back home in Ponyville; she has no reason to doubt her. The person who gave her friend the directions? She's unsure about that.)

Really? Who gave you the directions, anyway?

The Nurse Joy at the Mahogany Pokemon Center. I figured if I was going to rely on a native she was probably a good bet.

...Yeah, guess if we can rely on any natives who aren't Gym Leaders a Nurse Joy's gotta know some interesting stuff.

(A beat.) You think she knows what Pokemon made the Ice Cave like this in the first place?

I kind of thought it was the other way around, that the Pokemon came here because the cave was icy.

Although... if say, Suicune, or Articuno, stayed here once, that would explain it, given the power of the legendaries. Granted, Articuno is native to Kanto, but it's not that far to fly.

Really? I guess that'd make much more sense.

Haha, seriously? Articuno making a trip to Johto? That would be awesome! It'd be like taking a vacation to another region.

I imagine it wouldn't happen unless there was a pressing need for it. The legendaries seem to stay in their own regions most of the time.

Yeah...they do seem to like sticking around their own regions...

(Ooh, look Twi; the path that starts to curve finally pops up!)

So, we'll have to go visit them! Hehe, sure we never actually ran into Johto's Legendary Pokemon but we know about 'em, right?

I don't think finding them will be all that easy, but I'm more than happy to take the challenge if we find a place where it looks like they should be.

[She pauses at the curve and gives Rainbow a questioning glance.] This does go south, right? According to the compass?

Ha, of course! You think we could...actually catch one if we find it?

(Rainbow practically breathes her comment, only going silent long enough to look at the compass and answer Twilight's question with a nod. No doubt about it; it pointed at the S.) Sure! That's exactly what it says, so we must be on the right track.

That's... going a bit overboard, isn't it? Honestly, even if we could, I'm not so sure we should. They seem to be in control of some very important parts of the world, to try to capture them seems like an act of incredible hubris.

Though it would really help in taking on Team Rocket.

[She ponders the idea as they make the turn, unable to figure out if it would be truly worth it.]

Well...you have a point there. We could take pictures of 'em, right? Just so we could say we saw them!

Hehe, Team Rocket against even one of those Legendary Pokemon? They'd be begging us to arrest 'em!

(She's trying to figure out what 'hubris' means while keeping up with Twilight during the turn.)
