21st Spell: [Video/Action for Olivine]

[The view opens to a shot of the sea. Pure, pristine, gorgeous...

And apparently filled with swarms of oncoming Pokemon.]

Tesla, fire!

[A huge blast of electricity rips past Twilight into the sea, striking all the nearby swarming fossil Pokemon and knocking out a good chunk of them.]

Thank Celestia for strong Electric-types... Does anyone know what's causing this? I woke up this morning and the town was practically covered in these ancient Pokemon. I've been doing my best to hold them back, as have several others, but they just keep on coming no matter what we do. Is this happening everywhere?

[A small group of Kabuto, Omanyte, and Tirtouga dare the beach again only to be zapped into unconsciousness by Tesla. The Magnezone doesn't even seem tired when Twilight turns the camera on it, though it would probably be hard to tell...]

We've been okay so far, but we can't keep this up forever. And what if they start coming from somewhere aside from-

[There's a loud cry from behind. Twilight whirls around and the shot pans up to show the top of the lighthouse-

Which is covered in Archen that have just flown down from Route 39.]

The sea. Oh horseapples.

[One of the Archen screeches as it lifts off, and the feed ends with that ominous shot.]

[There's some pretty frantic squawking in the background, as behind Kayneth a shiny Archeops can be seen... apparently trying to negotiate with a crowd of Tirtouga, Anorith, Archen, Kabuto, and Omanyte that appear to have them surrounded. There's a shiny Machamp and a Serperior standing next to the Archeops... it's a little difficult to tell, but they seem a bit tense.

Basically, it was... well, it was interesting, I'll say that. Apparently one of the gym leaders was trying to contact the spirit of a trainer whom they presume dead after he disappeared in Lavender Town. I wasn't exactly expecting a seance to produce results here, much less the wrong results... this is patently absurd.

Well, to be fair, with Ghosts being a known quantity the degree of logic something like a seance holds suddenly takes a fairly dramatic swing upwards.

That said, I still probably wouldn't have believed it without seeing it for myself. Even knowing the cause I'm kind of amazed it could produce this sort of effect.

... By the way, what exactly is your Archeops doing?

Yes, that's true. I suppose I'm just somewhat bitter that the natives have the ability to do that sort of thing when we're left stripped of any powers we had before coming here.

[at this rate, he's going to develop a complex! ...granted that implies that hasn't already happened...]

...Ah, he's trying to negotiate with the attacking Pokemon. Since he's a fossil Pokemon himself, we both assumed that we may as well see if it's worth giving a shot, but it hasn't been working out too well.

You know... now that you mention it, that is aggravating. The Pokemon are one thing, but when other humans have abilities and we've been denied our own, that's just a bit ridiculous. Perhaps it's just a matter of how this world works, though. If we had proper teachers, we might be able to gain these sort of abilities on our own.

[Of course, odds of that are pretty much impossible.]

Perhaps, but I doubt it... I'm not quite sure if and how our abilities would be able to translate into this world's system, if that is the reason why we've lost them. I believe the only ability that I've heard of anyone retaining is the ability to understand and communicate with Pokemon if they had the ability to understand and communicate with animals beforehand, which is oddly specific-and, while I can see how it would be useful, it pales in comparison to much of what I was able to do before coming here.

...I... don't think he's gotten a clear consensus. I think it's a variety of motives combined with mob mentality, which wasn't too difficult of a conclusion to come to in the first place.

True enough, but if I could learn it, even if that was all I could get, I'd still take it. No skill or experience is wasted, I say.

Ugh, I hate that. The mob state is perhaps the point where normally rational beings are at their least reasonable. If we could only soothe or shock them out of it somehow, that would probably help drastically.

I suppose you're right... it may not be everything I want, but it'd at least be better than only having three days every six months in which I have access to anything even resembling my original abilities.

Probably, but I'm not entirely sure how that could be accomplished. I'm sure Bernini is trying to convince them of the wonders of the modern era, but I really doubt that's going to do much.

I think there's a saying... "You can't always get what you want, but you can usually find what you need", or something like that. It's a bit pessimistic, but sometimes it's a good viewpoint to remember. Granted, we don't really need psychic powers or the ability to communicate with our Pokemon either, but sometimes, it would really, really help.

Well, best of luck. At least he seems to be keeping them from attacking you, that's something.

To be honest, after a year of adjusting to this place I haven't had any difficulty functioning here... even the Pokemon have gotten a bit easier to deal with after training them for a sufficient amount of time, so I can't say it's just the utilitarian aspects that I miss.

For the time being, at least.

Well, we'd all like to have a little something special we can do, I think. Even if it's not really necessary.

That, and it's incredibly frustrating to put so much of your life into something and to be rendered unable to use it for no good reason.

Now on that subject, I can agree with you wholeheartedly. Studying and using magic was a large part of my very reason to live back home, and while I've managed by and large to shift the focus of it onto Pokemon instead, it really isn't the same thing.

No, it certainly isn't. Even though I enjoy studying Pokemon and trying to figure out this world's inner workings, there's something that I just find frustrating about it-I suppose it might be that it just doesn't come as easily to me, but I'm not sure if that's all of it... maybe if it wasn't an enforced tradeoff I'd approach it as more of a challenge.

We may as well be honest with ourselves. If it wasn't a forced trade it would be one we'd never make.

Oh, most certainly. I suppose it does force us to familiarize ourselves with Pokemon, at the very least-I probably wouldn't even begin to bother with them if I still had full use of my abilities... but at this point, I'd consider both of them fairly valuable.

The thing is, I probably would have gathered them anyway, if for research's sake alone. I could never pass up a potential opportunity to make a new discovery, even in a field I'd never encountered before.

But... perhaps I wouldn't have put as much effort into training them as I have.

Yes, that's what I mean. They're extremely interesting in and of themselves, but... I likely would have considered them little more than research subjects, to be completely honest. Having to rely on something naturally forces you to consider it more valuable than you might otherwise.

True. It's like the inverse of the old saying that you don't know what you've had until you lose it. Which also applies to our current situation, given how often we seem to think of ways our magic would be useful.

Yes, exactly. At this point, I find both to be extremely valuable, so I'r really rather not do without either of them. If only completing the gym challenge returned your original abilities to you as some sort of tangible reward...

The TMs and money are a bit of a tangible reward, at least? Though honestly only a couple of the moves have been all that useful to me.

They seem like they may be interesting to experiment with, but the fact that they're one-use makes them a bit limited... surely, they could at least provide some sort of repair service for completing the league challenge. And... honestly, if that was meant to be the actual reward for challenging every gym, then I'd imagine people would just challenge the gyms that give out useful TMS and the most money.

Well, if you're in a city already, you might end up deciding to challenge the gym anyway, just on the basis of "why not, I'm here and I might as well". Also, the cities people are most likely to avoid because they're out of the way are Azalea, Cianwood, and Blackthorne, and two of those have some of the best rewards, the Fly HM from Cianwood and the sheer monetary reward from Blackthorne.

Hm, yes, that's true. It's a shame that Azalea, at least, is ignored outside of that due to being out of the way; outside of the fact that you can't get a decent drink to save your life, it's a fairly pleasant place.

...actually, thinking about it, maybe it's some sort of strange means of attracting tourists? It does get you traveling and seeing the sights, at the very least.

I suppose that could work as a plan. If you get someone to come to each and every city, chances are they'll find the various shops and landmarks while they're there. And they'll pass those on, which would-
