22nd Spell: [Video/Action for Route 38]

[friendyousohard]

[The video clicks on with a view of a Magnezone hovering over the long grass, peering around as though looking for something. After several moments, it turns back to the gear and shakes its body back and forth, looking remarkably like a shaking head.]

Well, it's not surprising. I did have to search for weeks to find you, after all.

[The Magnezone bleeps unintelligibly at the gear. Even those who can understand Pokemon (and other Pokemon themselves) will only hear noises that sound oddly like R2-D2.]

Maybe someone else has one you can talk to. [The gear turns around to show Twilight's face.] A question. Well, two. First off, who out there has a Pokemon from the Magnemite line? And second, does anyone else have... trouble communicating with them? Of course most of us can't understand Pokemon when they talk, but even my other Pokemon can't seem to understand anything Tesla has to say. Are there other Magnemites who seem to have that issue? For that matter, other Pokemon in general? It's something I've never even heard of before.

Hmmm... and on a more general topic, here's something I've been wondering about for a while. If you were to take six Pokemon, start them at level one, and try to train them together as a coherent team, which ones would you pick? I've been considering the idea for a while now, and while I'm not certain it's practical to start right now I'd like to start gathering input.

[Blossom takes Twilight's hand, tugging gently. She reaches down with her other, picking a small flower and offering it to her.]

[She takes the flower, cradling it in her hand, and comes closer to Blossom at that tugging.]

Answering my gift all those months ago?

[buckyouup]

[She smiles again, pointing behind them and tugging on her hand again.]

All right. Show me the way, I'll follow right beside you.

[She's really hoping Blossom's going to be better at finding her trainer than Twilight herself has...]

[Blossom nods, slowly lumbering down the path. Eventually they reach a large bush. The venusaur nudges it carefully, pushing some if its branches aside to peer through it.

Not far past where they stand, Applejack is slumped down, leaning against a tree. Her hands are cupped in her lap, and her eyes are closed. Whatever she was doing, it was strenuous enough to put her to sleep.]

[friendyousohard]

[A bit of surprise shows in Twilight's eyes when she sees AJ slumped against the tree. Curious and maybe a bit worried, she moves in to check on her friend, kneeling down and looking her over. She doesn't appear to be anything other than exhausted from a glance at her face...]

[buckyouup]

[AJ huffs, squirming lightly. One eye peeks out from under the brim of her hat.

Oh. It's Twilight.

Good mor--

Applejack scrambles to her feet so quickly that her hat topples from her head. She presses herself flat against the tree, her eyes white and her face pale.]

W-what in tarnation are you doin' here!?

[friendyousohard]

[... Okay, that reaction kind of hurts. Her mouth twists into a frown and she pulls back a bit, pretty upset now.]

I could ask you the same thing, out here in the middle of nowhere. Or do you mean what am I doing close enough to talk to you?

[There might be a surprising (or not-so-surprising) amount of bitterness in that question.]

I-I...

[Ouch. Twilight. She's not used to such bitterness from you.]

A-ain't a gal entitled to some privacy?

[friendyousohard]

For a month?

[She doesn't really think she has to say anything other than that.]

I-I wasn't countin' the days. Didn't know it was that long.

How could you not realize how long you've been deliberately avoiding me?

[She is beginning to go from "upset" to "angry".]

[buckyouup]

...It sounds pretty bad when you say it that way.

[Her hand grips tighter as she averts her gaze.]

[friendyousohard]

Well I don't know how else to put it, and you know what? Maybe bad is how it should sound!

[Her own hands are clenched, tight enough for her nails to dig into her skin. After glaring balefully at AJ for a few moments, she finally sighs and lowers them to her sides.]

... Particularly considering when this started.

[buckyouup]

[She tenses up at the memory. She brings her hand to her chest, the brim of her hat falling over her eyes.]

Y-yeah.

[friendyousohard]

That's all you have to say? "Yea"h? Look... I realize I sprung that on you pretty suddenly, and I've been trying to give you some space to think about it, but for Celestia's sake, AJ, I've hardly seen one of my best friends for almost a month now! I could care less if you want to pretend it didn't even happen at this point, just... talk to me.

[Her voice tapers off from "angry rant" to "plaintive plea" close to the end there, and her hands hang limply at her sides as she stares almost pitifully at Applejack, just not knowing what she did so wrong.]

Damn it.

[buckyouup]

[She sighs softly. It seems every time she speaks to Twilight lately, she lacks the ability to form words. Instead, she takes Twilight's hand, unintentionally roughly, from the speed, and presses the contents of her own hand into Twilight's palm.]

Re: Damn it.

Ack! Hey, what-

[She stops mid sentence as she feels what's in AJ's palm. What is that... it's cold, and round, and hard.]

AJ... is that...?

[buckyouup]

[She nods. In Twilight's hand is a ring. The ring she gave to Fluttershy on the night she asked her out. The ring that she has no memory of before being told of it's existence. The ring that's been haunting her every thought for the last month.]

I don't... know if I can be the gal you want me t'be.

[friendyousohard]

[And, suddenly, it all makes perfect since. Of course. AJ's still lamenting how she could never remember what she was like with Fluttershy, how she unintentionally hurt the poor girl. But honestly, Twilight isn't all that concerned about a repeat of the incident.]

... AJ, the girl I want you to be is you. The same you I've been with this entire time. I don't want any part of you to change. Just... I want to be with you a little differently. A kiss here and there, a touch... That's all. I think I've finally figured out why I've been so confused about this whole love thing from the beginning, actually.

[She turns her head away.]

But what if I disappear again? What if everythin' we do amounts to nothin' but a weird dream? I don't wanna set you up for disappointment. I ain't gonna let you get hurt because of me.

[friendyousohard]

You could say the same thing about every friend you've ever made here in Johto, you realize. Would you pull away from them just because you'll one day leave?

[buckyouup]

But I ain't in love with them, Twilight!

[Her eyes go wide the instant she lets those words free. Damn her honesty. Why did she have to say those words? Now, of all times. Her, of all people.]

[friendyousohard]

You...

[She blinks once, then twice, analyzing what AJ's said, and then slowly, quietly begins to smile.]

Applejack... I think you may actually be more dense about this sort of thing than I am. And until now I wasn't sure that was possible. [Yes she's smiling while she says that. Actually... tearing up a bit too. Okay...]

[A small smile creeps across her own lips.]
