Oh, really Twilight? How fast would Spike be if he had to contend with lots of dangerous obstacles? I'm a Pegasus pony after all, and even I know the dangers of flying too high or too fast.

That's not exactly relevant at the altitudes Spike flies at. He'll be above the trees and well out of the way of any obstacles. Besides, the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. It's obvious that flying them around is faster than riding on the ground.
