16th Spell: [Video/Action for Goldenrod]

[The feed clicks on to show Twilight hugging what looks like a spaceship with eyes. Looks like her Magneton finally evolved.]

Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes! Finally, my very own Magnezone!

[She practically giggles in glee, clambering up onto the top of her newly evolved Pokemon with a grin. The Magnezone waits for her to be settled on top of it, and then slowly rises up into the air.]

[The feed suddenly clicks off.]

[Well, she's still embarrassed, but at least he's not making fun of her. That's relieving enough for her to smile, if a bit awkwardly.]

That's... actually why I got mine, silly as it sounds. I saw the final evolution of Magnemite and knew I had to have one, no matter how long I had to stay at Route 38 to find it. Granted, the incredible versatility and offensive power doesn't hurt.

Hey, the ability alone will give any hardcore steel-type user a heart attack.

[Which is why he's grateful for U-turn, really.]

Just gotta watch out for Fire type moves, but no type's perfect.

[He should know; his favorite Pokémon has a quadruple rock weakness, after all.]

Fire and Fighting, yes. Ground too, though I can neutralize that weakness with Magnet Rise, making it resistant to twelve types and immune to two.

[Two weaknesses. Twelve resistances. Two immunities. One neutral. That's virtually unfair.]

Of course, its biggest flaw is speed, so I'd want to do that before they have a chance to, say, earthquake it.

Unless you're up against, say, a Metagross with Gravity and Earthquake.

[But he's mostly just teasing. Riku doesn't underestimate the power of Megnezones one bit, nope.]

But Earthquake TMs are pretty much impossible to come by in the first place. Only time I've ever seen one was when I picked up my tournament prize.

True, but I wouldn't send Tesla out against a Metagross.

Of course, the ones I would aren't ready yet, but they will be.

[She raises an eyebrow.]

That's some prize. Earthquake's not just a powerful move, in the right hands in can be absolutely brutal. It must have been difficult deciding who to give it to.

Like your Larvesta?

[Heh.]

And it wasn't a matter of them deciding or anything. All winners got to choose any reusable TM they wanted; I just went for the move that'd give my team a little added coverage. Flare especially.

She's one option.

[And she very much appreciates having her around.]

Oh, one of the reusable ones. Well that's different. I keep forgetting they exist.

Hard not to when they're so rare. Not that I'm complaining, since they do come in handy.

[How else could he soup up his main team with Earthquake and Solarbeam? Someone's a bit of an over achiver.]

[Juuuuust a tad. Not that Twilight wouldn't do the same if she could.]

I imagine. Particularly as there's no other way to get Earthquake aside from learning it naturally and breeding it. That locks a lot of Pokemon out of getting such a powerful move.

Breeding's basically the only way I can think of for some species, like Riolu and Lucario.

[...Breeding. Hrngh, pardon Riku's Lucario if she grumbles something under her breath that may or may not sound like "tell me about it" in plain English.]

But species that can't breed without Ditto are pretty much out of luck. That is, unless they end up with a trainer with one of those TMs for a little while.

Hmmm... I'll have to put some thought into that. I don't know all that much about breeding as far as moves go, and Fluttershy isn't the type to think of that sort of thing. Looks like some research is in order.

[But then again, when isn't it?]

Well, if you need any pointers, I can probably fill you in. I mean, Flare's eggs tend to hatch with about forty moves...

[Hrumph. Flare averts his eyes, grumbling under his breath. Talk of eggs just reminds him of that crazy Spitfire.]

Because he has that many moves himself, or because of who he tends to breed with?

[Twilight doesn't appear to be helping, there.]

Because he's a powerhouse with at least fifty attacks.

[He nudges Flare with his elbow, getting yet another grunt. Stop putting him in the spotlight, trainer!]

Fifty... I didn't even know a Charizard could learn that many attacks.

[Seriously, how many TMs did you end up breaking over his head, Riku?]

They're surprisingly flexible. Just took a lot of TMs and tutors to turn him into the behemoth he is today.

[Hrmph. He's just gonna rub the top of his head a bit while Cinder finally stumbles forward, putting up her fists and... tripping over her tail. She was probably trying to express something about Flare, but it's hard to say, given that she's now scrambling back behind him.]

But if you think Flare's bad, Dragonites can learn even more moves. We're talking just about every type.

You raise a good point. I should see what TMs I can get that would work with Spike, it would probably be a lot more than I'd expect.

The tutors, though... is there some sort of map detailing where they are? I ran into the one who teaches headbutt purely by accident, and so far that's been it.

[He shakes his head.]

Nah, most of the tutors kinda migrate. Sometimes you'll catch them in towns, on routes... Usually I fly around in order to catch them.

Well, I guess it's only fair for them to be kind of hard to find if they teach such strong moves for free. Are there any you'd recommend seeking out in particular?
