[The video clicks on with a view of a Magnezone hovering over the long grass, peering around as though looking for something. After several moments, it turns back to the gear and shakes its body back and forth, looking remarkably like a shaking head.]

Well, it's not surprising. I did have to search for weeks to find you, after all.

[The Magnezone bleeps unintelligibly at the gear. Even those who can understand Pokemon (and other Pokemon themselves) will only hear noises that sound oddly like R2-D2.]

Maybe someone else has one you can talk to. [The gear turns around to show Twilight's face.] A question. Well, two. First off, who out there has a Pokemon from the Magnemite line? And second, does anyone else have... trouble communicating with them? Of course most of us can't understand Pokemon when they talk, but even my other Pokemon can't seem to understand anything Tesla has to say. Are there other Magnemites who seem to have that issue? For that matter, other Pokemon in general? It's something I've never even heard of before.

Hmmm... and on a more general topic, here's something I've been wondering about for a while. If you were to take six Pokemon, start them at level one, and try to train them together as a coherent team, which ones would you pick? I've been considering the idea for a while now, and while I'm not certain it's practical to start right now I'd like to start gathering input.

I've heard something about them. The nature of a Pokemon has some bearing on its skills and strengths, or something to that effect?

I haven't met any Pokemon with that kind of communication problem. It's normally not so difficult understanding them, but I think it can vary with species as much as it can with individual Pokemon. It is pretty different from the rest of your team.

(Because robot. Even the Golurk seems easier to speak with than Tesla.)

As for a new team...I think you already know a few combinations that would work, but there's a lot to consider, such as whether they've been bred or taken in from the wild.

Essentially. Some of them are better at offensive abilities and slack on defense or speed, or vice versa.

Even Fluttershy couldn't understand it, when she was here. I've never encountered something which could talk that she couldn't understand. I think Bracer might sort of be able to, but that's about as close as I get.

[Robo is basically a wannabe shounen hero in the body of a robot ghost. He's fairly easy to understand, but you might not want to.]

Well if you're going to start at level one, you more or less have to get bred ones. I don't think even the Pokemon on Route 29 are level one.

(Twilight, you're not seeing a sleeping Rainbow just appear on the 'Gear at random. It's just your imagination...)

[Her hand grips tighter as she averts her gaze.]

Meaning for your test to be truly valid, you would need a set of Pokemon with identical natures in both test groups, as well.

Well I don't know how else to put it, and you know what? Maybe bad is how it should sound!

[Her own hands are clenched, tight enough for her nails to dig into her skin. After glaring balefully at AJ for a few moments, she finally sighs and lowers them to her sides.]

... Particularly considering when this started.

Which would require either many, many test groups to pick out two ideal ones or a gigantic amount of luck. It's not exactly an ideal situation to test, I'll admit. But it's a problem that's been nagging at me, and any data on the subject I can get would be useful.

[She tenses up at the memory. She brings her hand to her chest, the brim of her hat falling over her eyes.]

Y-yeah.

[... Rainbow what are you even doing. Twi's tempted to just ignore her, but the fact that the gear clicked on to her causes a question to nag at her mind.]

I realize I sprung that on you pretty suddenly, and I've been trying to give you some space to think about it, but for Celestia's sake, AJ, I've hardly seen one of my best friends for almost a month now! I could care less if you want to pretend it didn't even happen at this point, just... talk to me.

[Her voice tapers off from "angry rant" to "plaintive plea" close to the end there, and her hands hang limply at her sides as she stares almost pitifully at Applejack, just not knowing what she did so wrong.]

(...Huh?! Rainbow bolts up, looking around for a moment or two before smiling sheepishly at Twilight. She didn't fall asleep; that was your imagination too!)

Eheh, not at all! I was ju-just resting my eyelids!

[She sighs softly. It seems every time she speaks to Twilight lately, she lacks the ability to form words. Instead, she takes Twilight's hand, unintentionally roughly, from the speed, and presses the contents of her own hand into Twilight's palm.]

That's true. It may not be a perfect experiment, but it should at least tell you something.

Your eyelids seem to have narcolepsy.

[The sarcasm oozes from every word as her eyes roll straight up.]

Anyway. So I know you don't have any Pokemon which can't communicate with the others, so how about my other question? If you were to make an entire team out of six Pokemon starting at level one to raise, what would they be?

Exactly.

Also, I'll admit I've gotten bored with most of my Pokemon being at their maximum level. Further training after that in anything but strategy doesn't really seem to do anything at all, and only some of them seem to absorb the tactical advice I try to give.

[She nods. In Twilight's hand is a ring. The ring she gave to Fluttershy on the night she asked her out. The ring that she has no memory of before being told of it's existence. The ring that's been haunting her every thought for the last month.]

(Okay! Totally ignoring the sarcasm, and getting right down to the better question with a very familiar grin.)

Pidgey, Hoothoot, Starly, Dratini, Pikachu and whatever's the first form of Unfezant.

[And, suddenly, it all makes perfect since. Of course. AJ's still lamenting how she could never remember what she was like with Fluttershy, how she unintentionally hurt the poor girl. But honestly, Twilight isn't all that concerned about a repeat of the incident.]

... AJ, the girl I want you to be is you. The same you I've been with this entire time. I don't want any part of you to change. Just... I want to be with you a little differently. A kiss here and there, a touch... That's all. I think I've finally figured out why I've been so confused about this whole love thing from the beginning, actually.

Huh. Two of those are not like the others. Unfezant's first form is called Pidove, by the way. And I'm surprised you didn't put a Tailow in there. Why a Dratini? That seems more like my sort of thing.
