A 'state' is also a word for a kind of governed sub-entity within a country, similar to a 'province'. I don't know if you divide things up like we do back home, but on Earth, pieces of land belong to their own governments, and an area controlled by one government is called a country. I'm from a country called the United States of America, and within that country, I'm from a state called Nevada. Nevada alone is about 110,600 square miles, but states vary in sizes.

It's okay, mind aren't either. We'll just have to do our best to explain things.
